DIY Upscaled Dollar Tree Lantern

I took a white plastic Dollar Tree lantern and upscaled it to look like something from Hobby Lobby. Read the post below to see how I did it.

Supplies Needed:

  • White Dollar Tree Lantern
  • Silver metallic paint
  • Mod Podge
  • Glitter
  • Ribbon
  • Twine
  • Scissors

The first thing I did was carefully take the top off of the lantern. This was a little difficult but I used a small scrapper to assist. I then took the LED candle out and set it aside. The candle just twists out. Once you have the lantern dismantled, it’s time to paint. started painting the top of the lantern first and then painted just the edges of the lantern. It will take a couple of coats to cover it well.

Next, “paint” some Mod Podge onto the snowflakes of the lantern. I did one side at a time. I then sprinkled it with a white glitter and shook off the excess glitter. After doing all four sides, I put the candle back in place. I cut a couple of sprigs of evergreen that I had on hand and bent them into a semicircle to lay around the candle. Next, make sure the lantern is completely dry and reassemble the top on the lantern. I then made a simple bow and tied it to the top of the lantern.

I love how this turned out. I think it really looks upscaled and could be used all winter long. This was a really easy project and I hope you will give it a try.

Happy Crafting,

Kathy

  1. This is so cute. Did they have big lanterns at DT? I only see the small ones. I love how you put your crafts in a list for us to look at with directions and get inspired to make one too. I never seen any crafters do it like that in a list. How do I follow you? I do not see a follow button but I will look again. Your crafts are really cute and do inspire me as just a crafter and follower of crafters to try some out. Have a good day.
